Abstract Purpose of Review People with mental illness are vulnerable to periodontal diseases. Explanations include the direct effects psychiatric illness, side psychotropic medication, lifestyle (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use), shared risk factors, difficulties activities daily living access dental care. Recent Findings Latest findings confirm bi-directional relationship between disease both use disorders (SUDs). On one hand, individuals SUDs at increased developing disease, strongest association being for severe illnesses. may contribute development or exacerbation through systemic chronic inflammation. Summary There complex interactions pathology illnesses/ that a wide range interconnected biological, behavioral, psychosocial factors.
